McDermott writes with gentle compassion and energy, making her belief in 'bliss' infectious and exciting. "The Count of Monte Cristo" is in my Top 5 Favorite Books List, and the story gets FIVE STARS. Her first published newspaper article, His Voice was His Vehicle, was an interview with singer/songwriter Jim Peterik from the rock n’ roll group, the Ides of March (and later, Survivor). It is not meant to be the "Theory of Everything"- but rather an introduction to a far wider exploration into the nature of existence. The book is a good read with wonderful images, highlighted by quoted commentary from the people who lived and or grew up there during the 20th century. At times I wished it was fiction that I was reading, but alas, there are too many he killed to not remember that he hurt them very badly, tortured, then killed them. The main character, Josephine did that as well, but it seemed that she wasn't willing to see the answer the Lord was giving her because it wasn't the answer she wanted, or expected. I ended up returning it immediately and buying the lonely planet's India guide - its MUCH thicker, but has information that is more useful for my stay. Few books are worthy of a 4am finish, MINE is definitely one of them. It’s time to forge new paths and create innovative models.
