Die Überlegung, daß Kaiser in seinen Dramen bei allen Entwicklungslinien, die sein Werk prägen, ein wiederkehrendes und begrenztes Repertoire an Konfliktmustern und Figurentypen verwendet, bildet den Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung, die erstmals auch unveröffentlichte Handschriften und Briefe des Künstlers exemplarisch erschließt. Kaiser betrachtete den Expressionismus als Paradigma, als «die größte Epoche der Kunst». Der Expressionismus blieb auch in den Jahren 1920 bis 1945 ein zentraler Bezugspunkt für Kaisers produktionsästhetisches Verfahren, doch widerrief der Dramatiker im Exil zentrale Positionen seiner expressionistischen Werkphase.
