lations follow Hoffmann's words and pictures right to the end of each story. For some of the stories a happier ending is then added in a few lines or in a sequel. Conrad is taken to hospital and his thumbs are reattached. Flying Robert is found next morning, clinging to a steeple, and is rescued by the fire department. A page at the end gives instructions for making "suncatchers" (stained glass window hangings) in the shapes of Struwwelpeter figures.Struwwelpeter was written in 1844 by Frankfurt physician Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894) as a Christmas gift for his three-year-old son Carl Philipp. He put it together very quickly from funny stories that he had been using to talk children out of their fear of the doctor, as they watched him penciling sketches to illustrate. The book is sometimes faulted as too scary for children, but it has nothing even remotely as scary as Hansel and Gretel or Babes in the wood - or today's television cartoons for children. Hoffmann knew better than these critics - he was a front-line professional, using these very stories to put his child patients at their ease. From 1851 onward he specialized in psychology. His book Struwwelpeter became immensely popular as soon as it was published (1845) and has remained so ever since:*Hundreds of editions. *Translations into over 50 German dialects. *Translations into over 30 languages. *More than a dozen English translations, one of them by Mark Twain. There is a whole literature of "Struwwelpetriaden" (parodies and imitations) and an active scholarly literature. There is a Struwwelpeter Museum in Frankfurt.
